Beginning as the gateway to the eastern hilly region, Dharan has been the center for economic and commercial activities for more then the last hundred years. The town of Dharan was born when a thick jungle was cleared for a small human settlement in 1890. In 1901 the Prime Minister Chandra Sumshere Junga Bahadur Rana established a small village at the foot of Vijayapur hillock and named it Chanrdranagar now it is known as Purano Bazar, and steady growth of the settlement got into a shape of town in course of time. In the beginning, as it is told, there was a thick jungle where the modern town of Dharan stands now. Fellers had set up many dharap (wooden platforms to saw logs.) all over the jungle. Where many Dharap’s are placed in the huge area that place is called Dharan in Nepali, that's how the town got its name Dharan. Since the development of the township of Dharan started in 1901, it has continued to grow and prosper. Although the major earthquake of 1932 did extensive damage to Dharan and the eastern half of Nepal, it was only one year later that Dharan was able to inaugurate its new main street and bazaar. The British added many new developmental facilities. On Nov 16, 1960 the municipality of Dharan was officially established. Fourteen years later the 24 acre Industrial Park opened the door for new industry. In 1989 Dharan was again struck by a devastating earthquake but soon rebuilt and continued its growth. In 1993 B.P.Koirala Institute if Health Science was founded. Today Dharan continues to enjoy vigorous growth especially in the fields if health care, education and community. Dharan is best known for having British Gurkha recruitment centre from 1953 to 1989, during this period this town gained popularity with better employment opportunities in the British Army overseas.Dharan is also known as city for education because there are various kinds of colleges. Dharan is fortunate to be the home of Dharan Campus the only food technology campus in the country. It is helping students from all over Nepal prepare to become not only skilled food preparation and storage technicians but also future micro-biologists and health care professionals. The Purwanchal Campus provides education opportunities to Nepal’s entire Eastern region. Their programs range from general mechanical and electrical engineering to refrigeration and civil construction. Mehendra Multipal Campus provides students with accredited degrees in Management, Humanities and Law and Pindeshwar Sanskrit Campus focuses on both lower and higher degrees in traditional Sanskrit.B.P.Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) the largest teaching Hospital in Nepal BPKIHS is not only a major educational center providing medical degrees but its professional staff also provides high quality health care services to the entire eastern region of Nepal and parts of northern India. Built as a joint venture between the governments of Nepal and India, it features some of the most up-to-date medical equipments available. It is also serviced by six local ambulances.Today Dharan is an urban town in Sunsari and a major trading centre for the hilly regions. Meeting point of different cultures Dharan occupies a multi-racial structure with Hindu, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim groups all present under one community. Proud to be a center of education, health, tourism and trade, Dharan is trying to come up not only as a model municipality in the eastern region but also in the whole of Nepal. It is densely populated and inhabited by different faces of people. It is a secular state, people following different religions. It has mixed ethnicity comprising of Rai, Limbu, Gurung, Magar, Subba, Brahmin, Chatter, Newar, Dalits and many others.With 39 temples and mandir Dharan is a popular pilgrimage spot for many holy peoples. Temples like Barahachettra, Dantikali, Pindeshwar, Buddha Subba, Panchakanya, Bishnu Phaduka are the famous holy places one should never miss to visit. Koshi Tappu Wild life Reserve is the only refuge for wild buffalo and is home for more then 300 species of birds. Rafting is possible on the Arun and Tamor River. It is connected with a domestic airport in Biratnagar, about 40km south. Dharan is also the gateway to many tourist destinations in the north east such as Bhedetar, Dhankuta, Hile, Basantapur, Terathum and Taplejung would definitely be a remarkable for anyone. The panoramic views of the Mt Makalu are seen from Hile and Basnatapur will never be enough to anyone who loves nature.
